Types of Speech Therapy

types of speech therapy

Speech therapy is a term referring to more than just one service. Speech and Language Pathologists, or SLPs, tailor their goals to fit the needs of each client. Today, we’ll explore the different diagnoses treated by Enablr-certified therapists.

Articulation Therapy

Focuses on improving the production of speech sounds. It helps individuals who have difficulty pronouncing specific sounds or have speech clarity issues (e.g., lisp or slurred speech). This can include remediation of phonological processes or motor planning impairments caused by apraxia of speech.

Language Therapy

  • Expressive Language Therapy: Assists individuals in improving their ability to express themselves using words, phrases, and sentences.
  • Receptive Language Therapy: Helps individuals understand spoken or written language, focusing on comprehension.
  • Pragmatic Language Therapy: Focuses on social communication skills, such as conversational turn-taking, making requests, or understanding non-verbal cues.
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Therapy: For individuals with greater communication need, AAC therapy provides alternatives to traditional speech, such as communication boards, speech-generating devices, or picture-based systems.

Voice Therapy

Aimed at helping individuals with voice disorders such as hoarseness, pitch issues, gender affirmation vocal quality or problems caused by vocal abuse/misuse. This therapy focuses on breath control, vocal resonance, and pitch modulation.

Fluency Therapy

Designed for individuals who stutter or have other fluency disorders. Techniques such as slowed speech, relaxation, and breathing exercises are used to improve speech fluency.

Cognitive-Communication Therapy

Helps individuals with cognitive deficits affecting communication. This type of therapy is often used for people recovering from traumatic brain injury, stroke, or neurodegenerative conditions (like dementia). It addresses memory, attention, problem-solving, and organization.
